When Stress Feels Normal

The Quiet Weight of May

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. Usually, this is a time when people talk about doctors, medicine, and big health terms. But for us, mental health isn't just a topic for a doctor’s office. It is about how we live our lives, how we feel when we wake up, and how we handle the world every single day.

Let’s talk about the parts of mental health that don’t always look dramatic or urgent. Most of the time, it starts small. It’s that stress you’ve learned to live with, the heaviness you carry so long it just blends into your everyday. As Black women, we are often taught to be the "strong one" for everyone else. After a while, that heaviness feels like just another part of your normal.

Doing It All vs. Doing Well

There’s a real difference between getting things done and actually feeling okay in your spirit. Think about your day: you might be showing up for work, answering every call, holding it down for family and friends. Most days, you’re probably putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own because that’s what we’ve always been expected to do.

But just because you’re doing all of that doesn’t mean you’re actually well. Sometimes, stress gets so familiar that we stop even calling it stress. We call it things like:

  • Being busy.

  • Handling life.

  • Just doing what needs to be done.

We treat exhaustion like it’s just part of the job of being the "backbone," but that’s not the truth. You deserve more than just making it through the day—you deserve to feel good while you’re living it. Maybe your body has been asking for a real break, but you’ve just called it "being tired" and kept moving. Maybe your spirit needs room to breathe, but you keep pushing because you feel like you have to be unbreakable.

How Stress Changes Your Life

Stress doesn’t just live in your mind; it finds its way into every part of your life. It can mess with your sleep, your appetite, your focus—even the way you talk to yourself. Suddenly, you’re questioning if you’re doing enough, even when you’re already "doing the most".

When stress hangs around for a long time, rest can feel like falling behind. Asking for help might feel "awkward" or like a burden to others. But needing to stop and take a breath is not a failure. You aren't less of a person because you’re tired. Slowing down is how you protect your health and keep showing up as the person you want to be.

Ways to Care for Yourself Every Day

Caring for your emotional wellness isn’t always about big gestures or spending money. Some days, it’s as simple as:

  • Taking a rest when your body asks for it.

  • Asking for support instead of trying to do it all alone.

  • Saying “I need to slow down” without giving a long explanation.

  • Writing down what you’ve been carrying so it doesn’t have to live in your mind alone.

Writing gives you space to breathe. A journal won’t fix everything, but it can help you slow down and really listen to yourself. It can help you name what feels heavy and figure out what’s yours to carry—and what you might be ready to set down.

What Emotional Wellness Really Means

Emotional wellness isn’t about pretending life is perfect or acting like you never get upset. It’s not about lighting a candle and expecting everything to be okay. We know life is more complicated than that.

As we move through this month, remember: your wellness is more than just what happens in a crisis. It’s about checking in with yourself every day. It’s that pause before you say yes to someone else. It’s the deep breath when you notice your shoulders are tight. It’s the honest moment when you admit, "I’m carrying a lot right now, and I need a minute".

That kind of awareness is real care. And your care matters. If stress has started to feel like your only normal, the Stress Reset Journal is available in the shop to help you pause and check in with yourself. It’s a simple tool to help you start again, with honesty and care.
